Honoring Those We’ve Lost:

The Run for Our Lives 5K Run and Walk is inspired by community and student advocates who have created spaces for suicide loss survivors to grieve their loved ones and for community members to take simple actions that can save lives—no matter what your “walk of life” may be.

Held for the first time at 3 campuses in eastern South Dakota, the Run for Our Lives 5K Fun Run and Walk builds on the foundation created by former USD staff member Janine Harris through Nikki’s Run, held in memory of her daughter, Nicole Vallie Harris. The first Nikki’s Run was held in Vermillion, SD in 2006 and raised more than $40,000 for USD students over the course of nearly 15 years. Last year, Adaya Plastow, a student at Dakota Wesleyan University, also organized a 5K for Mental Health event in Mitchell to honor a friend who had died by suicide. This year, through the combined efforts of student leaders at Dakota Wesleyan, Augustana, and the University of South Dakota, Run for Our Lives brings this spirit of support for student suicide prevention efforts to the Mitchell and Sioux Falls communities.

Through Run for Our Lives, we remember Nicole Vallie Harris and every friend and loved one we have lost to suicide. Run for Our Lives is also an opportunity for us to act so that peer-based, suicide prevention resources are available in our community.

Your presence here can make all the difference to someone receiving the support of Lost&Found campus resources. Let’s Run (and Walk) for Our Lives.
